Road Scholars

A transportation interlude from the UCLA Housing Voice

At the Lewis Center, we research housing and transportation because they are deeply connected. How housing is planned and built directly influences how people travel.

A small but growing number of places are coordinating planning and policy toward finding mutually beneficial approaches to housing and transportation. But implementation of these efforts is lacking.

Meanwhile, the lack of progress in housing production is hurting related outcomes in transportation. Transit ridership suffers. Traffic gets worse. And the people most affected are often the least served.

Introducing Road Scholars

Road Scholars is a transportation-focused interlude from the creators of the UCLA Housing Voice. Produced by Shane Phillips and featuring co-hosts Madeline Brozen and Juan Matute, this four-part series explores the intersection of mobility and housing.

In this series, we explore recent knowledge and hear from guests who discuss how housing levers affect transportation behaviors and what a coordinated approach to these topics can do to create more equitable urban outcomes.

Topics include:

  • How lack of housing progress undermines transit ridership.
  • How reducing parking requirements can shift travel choices.
  • The equity implications of new transportation modes like ride-hailing and micromobility.
