City of Los Angeles Commercial Sidewalks and Al Fresco Trends in Detail

These maps are companions to the Lewis Center publication, “Improving Access to Outdoor Dining Opportunities: Analyzing the Constraints of LA Al Fresco.” These interactive maps allow you to explore the spatial trends related to commercial sidewalks and LA’s Al Fresco program throughout the city.

Commercial Sidewalks

These data were created by processing the sidewalk polygons from the City of Los Angeles GeoHub using code created by Meli Harvey for New York City

Al Fresco Locations

This map displays businesses that applied for sidewalk dining or curbside dining through the LA Al Fresco program through LADOT between May 2020 and December 2021. Sidewalk dining authorizations are based on completed applications and may not accurately reflect on-the-ground sidewalk dining installations. Some businesses that applied for sidewalk dining are no longer in operation and others who applied for the program may or may not continue to be active participants.

Trends by neighborhood

This map summarizes the sidewalk and Al Fresco data by neighborhood using the LA neighborhood boundaries developed by the LA Times Mapping LA project.
